Species
- Red Oak is the most popular of any of the hardwoods. It's beautiful
grain and incredible warmth has long been appreciated both in the
furniture industry, as well as the interiors of many homes, hotels,
restaurants, etc. for flooring, mouldings, doors and windows. The
grain of oak is truly unmatched and is further enhanced when stained.
It's durability and integrity will make oak a popular choice for many
more years to come. The biggest drawback of Oak is the lengths that
are available. If you have ever looked at an Oak tree, notice how many
16' straight pieces you could get from that tree. 16' is rare, mostly
it comes in lengths that are heavy in medium lengths of 10' - 12'.
There are 2 species of Red Oak, Northern and Southern. Our Red Oak
mostly comes from the Appalachian area of the United States,
considered high quality Southern Oak with some Northern Oak included.
This is the most commonly used grade of Oak for mouldings and
furniture. Oak continues to be a truly beautiful and timeless hardwood
- Finger Joint Pine is our nation's No. 1 choice
for paintgrade mouldings. Small pieces of wood are recycled and
jointed together to create long lengths of wood for millwork at a very
inexpensive price. This has allowed enormous costs savings in
construction throughout the years. Technology has shown that Finger
Joint Pine milled correctly would most likely not break at a joint but
more likely to break at an area that is solid. Finger Joint when
painted should not show joints and be perfectly smooth as if it is a
solid wood. Easy to work with, easy to install, Finger Joint Pine has
been a valuable commodity for every paint grade project from high end
housing to typical tract housing for more than 40 years. While the
world economy now includes imported lumber from various countries such
as Chile, Russia, Brazil and Mexico, Finger-Joint Pine moulding now
includes all of these species instead of just domestic pine. The
manufacturing of these mixed species has been a bit of a problem,
however, vast improvements have been made just this past year.
Finger-Joint Pine can be seen in close to 95% of tract homes
constructed in the last 20 years in Southern California,
Nevada,Arizona and other paintgrade markets.
- MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a
paintgrade product that is relatively new in the market place. High
quality MDF has only been available for the last 3 years and is making
a huge impact across the nation. Ranger board MDF, considered
the "cadillac" of MDF boards is fastly replacing Finger
Joint Pine as the paintgrade product of choice, MDF sales are expected
to equal Finger Joint Pine in 1998. Multi million dollar homes choose
MDF moulding as do high end tract housing and now even medium and
lower end tract housing wishing to improve on typical mouldings
without adding increased costs. With costs less than Finger Joint
Pine, MDF is preprimed, has no joints, does not crack, split, twist,
warp, or any other conditions generic to wood. The lengths are all
long with no short lengths
